Kashmir, once known as paradise on earth for its idyllic landscape and gentle people became hell on earth because of territorial disputes between India and Pakistan. Caught between the political hegemonies of two nations, its people have not known peace or normal life for decades. Mohammad Muneem Nazir [1983] an Indian poet, songwriter-singer born in Srinagar, Kashmir, who writes in Urdu and Kashmiri, has committed his poetry and music to peace. He is co-founder of the live act, Alif, which is a fusion of contemporary music and poetry with ethnic sound. Alif’s work is known for its colloquial references to society. Winner of IRAA Award for the single “Like a Sufi”. Mohammad Muneem also teaches Urdu Poetry at Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, Pune, in a course called Sarir-e-khamma and is co founder of muziclub.com, a music training services company. Alif has performed worldwide and currently lives in Pune.
